Yttrium is used for red phosphorus in color TV's. It is a silvery metal,
ductile, and fairly reactive. Yttrium is the first rare earth element
discovered. Yttrium can occur as a by-product of nuclear fission. It is an
important element in the high-tech superconductor, yttrium barium copper oxide.
